Can I take the Active Sweden (prior FRISK) exam after PT Online to obtain the National PT-license?

Information about obtaining Active Sweden's (prior FRISK) national PT-license after completing PT Online.

Updated this week

Active Swedens National PT-license (www.ptlicens.se) is issued by Active Sweden and serves as an independent quality assurance for PT education programs (and ultimately Personal Trainers). It was created to ensure a high level of competence within the PT profession in Sweden. This license is required to work as a PT at most major gym chains (e.g., SATS, Actic, STC) as well as several private gyms.

For an education program to qualify for the National PT-licence, it must meet several criteria, including:

  • A significant number of physically instructor-led hours (not online learning).

  • An instructor team with the required qualifications (university education and/or extensive experience in the PT profession).

  • Coverage of all the components needed to meet the competence standards.

Since Lic. PT Online is conducted entirely online, it does not provide the national PT-license (FRISK-licence).

Options After Completing PT Online

If a student completes a non-FRISK-accredited education program and later decides they want the license, there have traditionally been two options:

  • Enroll in an accredited PT education.

  • Take the FRISK exam.

The Academy now offers a simpler solution that ensures you gain all the required competencies without having to pay twice. With this option, you can transfer your existing knowledge and skip directly to the practical parts of PT PRO, while deducting the cost of PT Online (up to 15,900 SEK) from the PT PRO price.

Additionally, there is the option to take Active Sweden's exam, which is designed to assess the knowledge equivalent to a full practical PT education. However, if you haven’t completed a practical education, this means you’ll need to test on knowledge you haven’t been taught, leading to a higher likelihood of failure. Each attempt costs nearly 10,000 SEK, making this a potentially expensive path.

Our Recommendation

We strongly recommend that those who want the National PT-license enroll in a program that meets the requirements. Not just to obtain a certificate but to ensure that, when you’re on the gym floor delivering services, you feel confident in your ability to meet the standards of the profession.

Tips from Us

  • If you complete PT Online (or a similar online program) and want to take Active Sweden's exam, consider working at a gym that doesn’t require the National PT-license for a few months. This will give you practical experience and better prepare you for the exam.

  • Consider upgrading to PT PRO with us instead. You’ll deduct the full cost of PT Online from the PT PRO price, so you won’t lose anything and will receive the FRISK license upon completing your PT license. :) [Learn more about PT PRO here!]
